For the first time fashion designer Dries Van Noten allows a filmmaker to accompany him in his creative process and rich home life. For an entire year Reiner Holzemer documents the precise steps that Dries takes to conceive of four collections, the rich fabrics, embroidery and prints exclusive to his designs. This film offers an insight into the life, mind and creative heart of a master fashion designer who, for more than 25 years, has remained independent in a landscape of fashion consolidation and globalization.

This is a well rounded film about not only his fashion, but his life as a private person. I would consider Dries van Noten a true, old fashioned artist who strives to create a vision. He has input into every aspect of his collections, from designed fabrics to shoes.
I especially enjoyed his musings on finding a new word for “fashion” as “fashion” implies that it will be gone in six months. What he creates is for a lifetime.
