6ART – POSTER
This year Drew Struzan was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. Since 1958, the society has elected to its Hall of Fame artists recognised for their distinguished achievement in the art of illustration. Artists are chosen based on their body of work and the impact it has made on the field of illustration.
Drew Struzan created the posters for some of the most iconic movies of the past 30 years, including Indiana Jones, Back to the Future and Star Wars. The film tells the story of this distinctive artist, beginning with his early works in commercial and album cover art to his acclaimed career and recent retirement as one of the most recognisable and influential movie poster artists of all time.
The film centres around the beginning and end of Struzan’s career. During the low-income early days, the starving art-school student was at odds with his parents and unable to afford classes, though the situation was swiftly alleviated by meeting his soul mate, Dylan, and landing work illustrating album covers for the likes of Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper. In short order, Struzan went from making $5,000 a year to earning $50,000 a job by partnering with movie-advertising pioneer Tony Seineger (an innovator deserving of his own docu).
You will so appreciate spending time with this cheerful, unassuming man, and will enjoy seeing the artist acknowledged by celebrities who owe him so much – like Michael J. Fox, who says he can hardly look at his watch without feeling he’s reenacting the signature image of Back to the Future!
The film features exclusive interviews with noted filmmakers, artists and critics including George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Frank Darabont, Guillermo del Toro, Steven Spielberg, and many others.
