Clear

Maybe it’s because it is British made and not American. This is what a Little Women could have been – instead of that dreadful OTT #metoo feminist in your face production.
Lots of top talent, modernised but not forgetting the classic, smart, clever. Well directed and thoroughly enjoyable. Bill Nighy exists purely to be Bill Nighy.

Following the antics of a young woman, Emma Woodhouse, who lives in Georgian- and Regency-era England and occupies herself with matchmaking – in sometimes misguided, often meddlesome fashion- in the lives of her friends and family.

You’d think we would be Emma-ed out by now but this new adaptation is wonderful!! Autumn de Wilde’s approach to this tale of frenzied and complicated social activity is both elegant and comedic. Charm is one of the hardest qualities to capture (or even explain), and there is genuine charm here. The performances are uniformly excellent, each actor bringing depth and shading to their characters. Jokes set up in the beginning of the film pay off big in the final scene. This kind of thing takes real care, a sensitive and pointed accumulation of details which add up to the unmistakable sensation that those palatial estates are inhabited by living breathing eccentric people.
