Awards: 6 Goyas incl best film director, actor, screenplay; best actor Cannes (Banderas)
One of Pedro Almodóvar’s more understated and beautiful films but it has all of the elements of his other films perfectly balanced. More autobiographical than ever and stunningly sensitive and beautiful. Moving slowly and deliberately with his gift of creating complex plots with scenes that connect and echo and resonate. Fantastic performances throughout with understated moments that Almodóvar perfectly nails every time. What a joy to watch.
Salvador Mallo, a filmmaker in the twilight of his career, remembers his life: his mother, his lovers, the actors he worked with. The sixties in a small village in Valencia, the eighties in Madrid, the present, when he feels an immeasurable emptiness, facing his mortality, the incapability of continuing filming, the impossibility of separating creation from his own life. The need of narrating his past can be his salvation.
